Put 'Em Together For National Cleavage Day
Posted By:Jane Wells
Sectors:Media

Here's something to turn that frown upside down. In South Africa, it's National Cleavage Day, sponsored by WonderBra [HBI  Loading...      ()   ].

"NCD" celebrates "firm support for both the right and the left", and this year it held a contest. But get this. The contest doesn't involve what you think it does! Instead of buxom women, entrants sent in photos of themselves (like the one here) holding up picket signs PROTESTING THE EVENT.

Oh, those wacky Boers! The winner received an all-expense paid trip to Durban today for the first "One Day International cricket match in Durban against Australia". Wow...a double-D prize.

WonderBra parent Hanesbrands could use the publicity, and the stock could certainly use a lift, underperforming the broader market so far this year. But should we be outraged about a day which clearly seems to objectify women? WonderBra says settle down. National Cleavage Day is meant to "solemnize women's independence and power". Oh.

Meantime, the South Africa "Business Day" Insider reports the term "cleavage" now has a broad variety of meanings:

The Traditional Cleavage: plunging necklines, low-cut tops, typically leveraged with enhancing bras.

The Side Cleavage: typically visible from the side, but not from the front (crossover dresses, backless dresses).

The Netherage or Australian Cleavage: exposure of the underside of the breast, usually when extremely short-crop tops are worn.

Cleavage Noir or Centre Cleavage: very little breast is visible yet the centre of the chest is exposed. An effect usually achieved by low buttoned down tops and the absence of a bra.

Bandeau Cleavage: use of a band of fabric as opposed to a strapless bra in order to flatten the bust.
