Are you rethinking your Cabo vacation plans?
Are you telling your college-age children there is NO WAY they can go to Mexico for spring break? A violent drug war is killing the tourism industry south of the border.
"I say don't go to Mexico," actor Edward James Olmos told Larry King last month. When asked if that boycott included resort cities, Olmos said yes. "Stay out of Mexico. Maybe they'll get the message."
But a very high end spa resort is taking issue with the actor, believing his words are unnecessarily scaring people away.
"I write to let you know that we are going through some very serious times, so much so that our ability to remain open is threatened," says an email forwarded to me from a long-time customer of Rancho La Puerta. The ranch is a highly-rated, exclusive hideaway outside Tecate where one week stays can top $4,000.
Resort management says business is plummeting "due to misinformation," and that the areas of Mexico plagued by violence are "nowhere near Rancho La Puerta." Last week, for the first time in the resort's 70-year history, there were more cancellations than reservations, and management is blaming Olmos' comments for much of the dropoff.
"Mr. Olmos, we beg to differ," says the email. "Your warning is a suggestion that U.S. citizens punish all of Mexico and its hardworking citizens—like our staff—for what has been happening in their country. It is terribly hurtful and unfair." It goes on to say that Tecate has only had one violent incident in the past two years, making it much safer than many American cities. "But fear may drive us out of business."
