I've been a reporter for a very long time, and I've lived through my share of "technical difficulties".
Nothing is as frustrating, however, as the wrong tape rolling when you're reporting a tragedy. One of my very first assignments was covering a police funeral, and when the tape rolled, it showed...a Mardi Gras parade. How do you recover from that?
Well, probably a bit like this anchor trying to recover from the "Mug Shot Fail" seen here:
In this clip from WFSB in Hartford, anchor Kara Sundlun reports on a suspect in the eight-year-old disappearance of a teenage girl in Massachusetts. The case of Molly Bish has long been an unsolved tragedy, which might have finally caught a break. Unfortunately, when the newscast showed a picture of the suspect, the image that came up on screen was...a hamster.
I've seen a lot of mistakes made in my day (like the time we reported on Chandra Levy's disappearance and suspicions cast on Rep. Gary Condit-we showed Phil Condit, Boeing's then-CEO). However, this blooper may take the cake.
