Howard Dean

Former Vermont Governor, Former Democratic National Party Head

Governor Howard Dean currently serves as a senior strategic advisor and independent consultant for the Government Affairs practice at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP where he focuses on health care and energy issues. Additionally, Governor Dean currently serves as an independent consultant to Democracy for America, the organization he founded after his 2005 presidential campaign. He will continue to work with them to further their mission of supporting progressive issues and candidates across the country.

Most recently, Governor Dean led the Democratic Party to success as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2005 to 2009. Governor Dean’s chief accomplishment as chairman of the DNC was the implementation of the 50-State Strategy and the development of 21st-century campaign tools. Under his leadership, significant resources were dedicated to revitalizing the party by building and strengthening the organizational tools, technological capabilities and infrastructure required to win while laying the foundation for a long-term Democratic majority.

Governor Dean gained national prominence as a U.S. presidential candidate in 2004, and he served as the Governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2003, where he created a record based on fiscally conservative principles that promoted equality and opportunity for his constituents.

Governor Dean's successes prompted Governing magazine to proclaim him "Public Official of the Year" in 2002. Dean's leadership roles also include turns as chairman of the National Governors' Association, the Democratic Governors' Association, and the New England Governors' Conference.

Before entering politics, Dean received a medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City in 1978. Upon completing his residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, he went on to practice internal medicine in Shelburne, Vt.

He is married to Dr. Judy Steinberg and they have two children, Anne and Paul.
