Apple Says 'Thanks a Billion' — Again!

Apple has done it again, surpassing the 1 billion plateau in yet another venture. This time, the big milestone comes on the company's wildly successful App Store.

If you go to www.apple.com you'll see the big announcement with the App Store download news of 1 billion downloads. The App Store went live July 11, 2008, and since then we have been tracking its unusually broad appeal and success. It achieved 10 million downloads in its first weekend. When it launched it was available in 22 countries; today it's in 77 countries.

The next big milestone was on Sept. 9, with 100 million downloads and 3,000 apps available. About five weeks later, on Oct. 21, the company announced over 200 million downloads across 5,500 apps. And then on Dec. 5, 300 million downloads and 10,000 apps available.

By last month, the company [AAPL  Loading...      ()   ] reported 800 million downloads, 25,000 apps in the store, and lots of smiles in Cupertino with Apple once again re-inventing the way consumers shop for software applications — and significantly broadening the iTunes/iPod/iPhone/now-App Store ecosystem.

The winner of the 1 billionth download will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod Touch, a time capsule and a MacBookPro. And Apple hopes to announce the identity and the app he or she downloaded shortly.

Apple doesn't break out how many downloads cost money, and how many are for free, but analysts say this could easily be a $1 billion revenue generator by next year.

In other news, Apple got in hot water earlier this week, removing one of the apps on its store, called "Baby Shaker," from a designer named Sikalosoft. The controversial program raised a ruckus among those trying to spread awareness over shaken baby syndrome and infant brain injuries that can result from the practice. Apple quickly removed the 99-cent program earlier this week.
