European Union's industry commissioner was reported to have questioned Fiat's ability to do separate deals with two car makers given its high debt level, prompting a sharp rebuke from the Italian group.

Italian news agency ANSA quoted Guenter Verheugen as telling Germany's Bayerischen Rundfunk that he was surprised by news of Fiat's interest in General Motors's [GM  Loading...      ()   ] Opel, a German subsidiary.

I ask myself where this highly indebted company finds the money to bring forward two operations of this kind at the same time," ANSA quoted him as saying.

Fiat is also in talks to form a partnership with U.S. car maker Chrysler.

Fiat Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne was quick with a response.

"I would have expected him to engage in constructive dialogue with the European carmakers to resolve the issues which are negatively impacting industry today, rather than issuing death sentences for the industry or unilaterally selecting who will survive," he said in a statement.

Fiat shares ended the day 3.8 percent higher in Italy.
