Posted By:Lee Brodie
Companies:Geron Corp

Which biopharma firm could be just what the doctor ordered to remedy an ailing portfolio?

Guy Adami says it's Geron  [GERN  Loading...      ()   ] !

In the worldwide race to develop stem cell therapies, Geron is a leader.  According to the firm's website, Geron is developing first-in-class biopharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancer and chronic degenerative diseases, including spinal cord injury, heart failure and diabetes.

Here are some more particulars:

Geron (GERN)
-Based in Menlo Park, CA
-Sector: Healthcare
-Industry: Biotechnology & Drugs
-Market Cap: $467.5 million
-52 Week Low $1.95
-52 Week High $8.50
-Up about 13% since the beginning of '09

What makes Geron a rising star?

Essentially, it’s an intellectual property play, says Adami. These guys have something like 300 patents. Also there’s decent short interest; so in the near term I think you could see a short-covering rally.

However, if you go in for the long term, it's important to remember that biotechs are a bit of a gamble. Just know that it could go to zero, or it could go to $10.
