Google Outage And Some Expert Perspective

From the good folks at AlertSite, a web performance management company that tracks up-time, down-time and everything in between when it comes to a site's activity:

The company confirms what many of you have been writing me, that Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Sites were either "completely non-functional," or "barely functional" from about 10:50a to 12:40pEDT. The outages stretched to Google's home page, which AlertSite says showed sporadic errors between 11:02aEDT and 11:48aEDT. Google, the company says, showed a "greater than 5 percent error rate" which you can see for yourself at Google. However, AlertSite says the error rate is closer to 90 percent during the period in question.

Still, if this is Google's [GOOG  Loading...      ()   ] only downtime this month, that would yield a 99.8 percent availability (down for about 90 minutes during the 744 hours of the month. Not too shabby.)

But AlertSite's Chief Strategy Officer Ken Godskind brings up a very good point, telling me "This also stretches to 'the Cloud' in general.

Like I always say, stuff happens.

People make mistakes, equipment breaks, code rollouts don't go as planned. There is no such thing as 100 percent uptime. Although I am a huge fan of Google Apps, this isn't the first recent issue with Gmail and it does add a certain level of 'sobriety' to the drunken promise of the Cloud."

All points well taken.
