Since the beginning of the year, many companies have seen their market caps -the total number of outstanding shares multiplied by the stock price - more than doubled, while others have seen sharp drops in the valuation of their companies.

According to the most recent data from Thomson Reuters and since the end of 2008, the NASDAQ 100 has seen an increase of $217 billion in market cap value, compared to a $259 billion loss for the Dow, and a $50 billion drop for the S&P 500.

The following tables depict a screen of the companies in each major US index, organized by the largest dollar amount gains or losses in market cap valuations year-to-date.  Note that companies' shares outstanding change along with their share price.  This screen uses the product of the prices and shares outstanding on December 31 compared to those available at yesterday's close.
