100 protest outside Trinidad smelter site
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - About 100 people protested outside the site for a planned $786 million aluminum smelter in southwestern Trinidad as Prime Minister Patrick Manning attended a groundbreaking ceremony.
The protesters claim the smelter — a joint venture between Trinidad and Venezuela's Sural that is due to start production in 2011 — will cause cancer and other health problems.
During the Wednesday ceremony at the La Brea site, Manning claimed the protesters were agitators and not local residents.
He said the people of La Brea continue to support the establishment of the aluminum smelter, noting some 800 people will work full time at the smelter and industrial park.
