] – already well known for its cash registers -- needed to find itself another niche to fill.
And that niche has come in the form of self-service DVD machines.
It may sound surprising but the demand for kiosks that rent DVDs is exploding largely because they’re convenient and they allow movie rental stores to cut down on staff.

] has teamed with NCR to introduce 10,000 DVD rental kiosk units by the end of next year.
We were so intrigued we invited NCR Chief William Nuti to join us on Fast Money.
He tells us this area of his business – which he calls entertainment -- is growing very quickly. "In about 10 years, entertainment has the potential to become as big as finance or retail," says Nuti.

] cited the growing popularity of kiosks as a possible drag on its outlook.
"We've seen tremendous shift in terms of consumers' rental behavior moving out of the store to DVD rental kiosks, and that number is forecasted to triple between now and 2011," Nuti adds.
And it’s not just an American phenomenon. Nuti says similar patterns are emerging in Western Europe, Asia-Pacific and Australia-New Zealand.
