Covanta buys minority stake in Detroit facility
DETROIT - Covanta Holding Corp. on Wednesday said it purchased a 30 percent stake in an energy-from-waste facility currently operated by subsidiary Michigan Waste Energy.
Since 1991, Michigan Waste Energy has operated the facility, which annually processes about 800,000 tons of municipal solid waste, which are used to generate steam and electricity. The facility displaced more than 12 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions had the waste been landfilled, the company said.
The company did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.
Shares of Covanta rose 5 cents to $17.01 in morning trading Wednesday.
