Monday

The futures are down this morning and we are looking at a weak start to the week. How does this stack up when compared to other Mondays? Here are the historical averages for Mondays overall, first Mondays of a month, and first Monday of a quarter.

Which will show up today? None are too exciting but maybe we can build off of the knowledge that July 6 tends to be a better day than others for the Dow. The NASDAQ, on the other hand, seems to hate Mondays the most.

Dow (since 1896):

  • Mondays overall - Avg loss of .07%, up just over 49% of the time
  • First Monday of the Month - Avg gain of .08%, up 54% of the time
  • First Monday of the Quarter - Avg gain of .08%, up 54% of the time
  • First Monday of July - Avg gain of .20%, up 54% of the time
  • First Monday after July 4th - Avg gain of .04%, up 56% of the time
  • July 6 (regardless of day) - Avg gain of .29%, up 61% of the time

S&P 500 (since 1928):

  • Mondays overall - Avg loss of .06%, up just over 48% of the time
  • First Monday of the Month - Avg gain of .04%, up 53% of the time
  • First Monday of the Quarter - Avg gain of .05%, up 54% of the time
  • First Monday of July - Avg gain of .16%, up 61% of the time
  • First Monday after July 4th - Avg gain of .03%, up 56% of the time
  • July 6 (regardless of day) - Avg gain of .30%, up 53% of the time

NASDAQ (since 1971):

  • Mondays overall - Avg loss of .13%, up just over 46% of the time
  • First Monday of the Month - Avg loss of .03%, up 52% of the time
  • First Monday of the Quarter - Avg loss of .12%, up 48% of the time
  • First Monday of July - Avg loss of .05%, up 48% of the time
  • First Monday after July 4th - Avg loss of .12%, up 52% of the time
  • July 6 (regardless of day) - Avg loss of .14%, up 42% of the time

Weighing on the Dow in the premarket this Monday morning are Alcoa , Chevron , Caterpillar , Bank of America , and Exxon Mobil .
