Hansen Medical 2Q revenue misses estimates

MOUTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Hansen Medical Inc. on Monday estimated second-quarter revenue well short of Wall Street expectations, saying the economic slump caused customers to hold off on buying the company's Sensei Robotic Catheter systems.

Hansen said it expects to report $3.1 million to $3.3 million in revenue for the quarter. It said it will record revenue from the sale of six Sensei systems during the period. Analysts expected $8.8 million in revenue, according to Thomson Reuters.

The company reported $7.1 million in revenue in the first quarter of the year. That included revenue from the sale of 10 Sensei systems.

Hansen President and CEO Frederic Moll said several customers delayed their orders, seeking additional approvals or considering different ways to finance the purchases. He said it took longer to close sales as a result, with some orders possibly being finished in the third quarter.

The company also said it shipped about 626 of its Artisan catheters, including 100 that were sold to one international medical center. Hansen shipped about 600 of the catheters in the first quarter.

Hansen is expected to make its full second quarter report in early to mid-August. Analysts expect the company to report a loss of 36 cents per share.
