Smithfield meatpacking plant
MILWAUKEE - Smithfield Foods Inc. says its customers should not expect much of a disruption due to a fire at its Patrick Cudahy Inc. plant in the Milwaukee area.
The nation's largest hog producer and pork processor says in a statement Monday its other facilities have extra capacity to help with production.
The plant makes packaged meat products, like bacon, salami and ham, for retail and foodservice customers, such as restaurants and other commercial establishments.
Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield has been restructuring its operations and shuttering some plants to focus on its packaged meat business, which is more profitable than its hog business.
The plant has about 1,800 employees and ranks as one of Smithfield's larger plants.
