PHOENIX - Universal Technical Institute Inc. said Monday that Sherrell Smith is leaving his post as chief operating officer of the education training provider, effective immediately.

A company representative could not be immediately reached for details on the reason for Smith's departure.

UTI said in a statement that Smith joined UTI in 1986 and served in numerous roles including student services director, campus president, vice president of regional operations and most recently as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Tom Riggs, current senior vice president of people services, will assume the role of senior vice president of campus operations, UTI said. He will have responsibility for campus operations, future student services, curriculum development and the manufacturer training programs.

Shares rose 5 cents to close earlier at $14.35.
