SC steel mill no longer running; closes July 12

GEORGETOWN, S.C. - A South Carolina steel mill is no longer running, and officials don't know when they will start it back up.

Steelworkers union President James Sanderson told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach that some workers remain in the Georgetown plant shipping out the rest of the steel, while others are cleaning up.

Mill owner ArcelorMittal says it has to indefinitely shut the mill because the economic downturn has diminished the need for steel.

Federal law requires the workers stay on the job until Sunday.

Sanderson has said that union members rejected a proposal from the mill owners to take a $3.65 per hour pay cut and work just 24 hours during slow periods.
