COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Gazette in Colorado Springs says it has dismissed an intern after concluding that four of her stories published over the last month contained passages substantially similar or identical to stories first published by The New York Times.

Gazette Editor Jeff Thomas announced the dismissal of Hailey Mac Arthur, a college student, in an editor's note on the paper's Web site Tuesday. She worked at the paper since mid-May.

Thomas wasn't sure which college she attends. Mac Arthur didn't immediately return a message to The Associated Press requesting comment.

Thomas apologized in the editor's note to readers.

The Gazette is owned by Irvine, Calif.-based Freedom Communications Inc., a privately held company that owns 33 daily newspapers, including The Orange County Register.
