Should You Game Bank Earnings To The Upside?

Entry Point
Investors are nervously anticipating all the bank earnings about to flood the Street. How should you be positioned?

Goldman Sachs [GS  Loading...      ()   ] kicks off bank earnings on July 14 with investors whispering about upside surprises after BofA Merrill upgraded the stock to a “buy” with a price target of $175.

Later next week we’ll hear from JPMorgan [JPM  Loading...      ()   ] , Bank of America [BAC  Loading...      ()   ] and the besieged behemoth Citigroup [C  Loading...      ()   ] . And although Fox Pitt Kelton expects profits to fall 67% on average across the sector, the numbers are still expected to be the best since the financial crisis exploded in September.

True big banks remain under pressure, but some may report pleasant surprises especially due to the recent surge in mortgage refinancing.

Does the potential of stronger than expected results present any buying opportunities in the sector?

On Fast Money’s Halftime Report Christopher Zook of CAZ Investments said he didn't think so because strong results were already baked into share price.

So where’s the opportunity?

It may present itself if some banks miss especially if a miss drags down the broader market.

And if that should happen Zook tells Fast Money on the 5p show he’s a buyer of commodities on dips because longer-term there should be an increased demand for what Dennis Gartman calls “things that hurt if you drop them on your foot.”

Zook’s Ways To Play

Buy Commodities (Gold [US@GC.1  Loading...      ()   ], Copper [US@CL.1  Loading...      ()   ])
Buy Oil Service HOLDRs ETF [OIH  Loading...      ()   ]
Buy Energy Names [XLE  Loading...      ()   ]

Christopher Zook also has some thoughts on other sectors such as healthcare. See the entire interview. Watch the video above!
