No progress in Pratt-union talks

SOUTHINGTON, Conn. - The machinists' union at Pratt & Whitney says no progress has been made in talks with company officials about the possible elimination of 1,000 jobs in Connecticut.

The union and representatives of the jet-engine maker met for a second time Tuesday to discuss the planned closing of the Cheshire engine repair plant and the shutdown of some operations in East Hartford. More negotiations are set for Thursday.

Officials at Pratt, a subsidiary of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp., have said they're evaluating the closures in case they can't find needed cost savings. The company has about 11,000 workers in Connecticut.

The machinists' union says the company is interested in any proposals by the union to save jobs, but it hasn't said what concessions it would need.
