Pops & Drops: Canadian Solar, American Express...

Following are the day’s biggest winners and losers. Find out why shares of Canadian Solar and American Express popped while Sunoco and Alcoa dropped.

POPS (stocks that jumped higher)

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) popped 17%. The firm reported a surprise second-quarter profit, on strong sales in all its markets, and raised its full-year shipment outlook. - It seems like everything is going right at least right now, says Pete Najarian.

Limited Brands (LTD) popped 13%. Same-store sales fell less than expected and the “less bad” news was enough to send shares to their highest level in nearly 10 months. - I'd be taking profits, says Guy Adami.

American Express (AXP) popped 3%. Citigroup upgraded the firm to ‘buy’ from ‘hold’ due to improving credit trends. - With delinquencies improving it says to me things are getting better, muses Tim Seymour.

David Faber. The CNBC favorite has a fan in Transformers star Shia LaBeouf. The 23-year old actor, who will star in Oliver Stone’s upcoming sequel to the 1987 hit “Wall Street,” was seen on the streets of NYC carrying Faber’s book “And Then The Roof Caved In.”

Sears (SHLD) popped 3%. Bullish sentiment lifted this department store as well as the entire retail sector after same-store sales came in better-than-expected, though down 5% year over year. - Giddyup, says Pete Najarian.

Wendy’s (WEN) popped 7%. The company posted a quarterly profit on Thursday and said July sales trends were improving. Also the board authorized a $50 million stock buyback program.

DROPS (stocks that slid lower)

Sunoco (SUN) dropped 3%. The company reported a second-quarter net loss and said rising crude oil prices and weak demand for gasoline and diesel squeezed its margins. - I'm a buyer around $23.50, counsels Joe Terranova.

Alcoa (AA) dropped 4%. As commodities sold off Thursday, so did shares of this aluminum giant.

United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) dropped 6%. The ETF moved in tandem with the price of nat gas and that was lower after stockpiles grew more than expected.
