POPS (stocks that jumped higher)
E Trade Financial (ETFC) popped 7%. Citi upgraded the stock to ‘buy’ from ‘hold,’ citing its stronger balance sheet and a possible deal with TD Ameritrade and Charles Schwab. - I think it's an option with no time expiration, says Guy Adami, but I would not buy it.
Sprint Nextel (S) popped 10%. Investors bid the stock higher on speculation Deutsche Telekom is in talks to purchase the company. However, CNBC's David Faber says the companies are not in merger talks. - I'd keep an eye on this one, says Pete Najarian.
CONSOL Energy (CNX) popped 5%. A favorable Barron’s article said improving global demand could boost this stock even higher. - Don't be afraid of the coal stocks, counsels Joe Terranova.
Tenet Healthcare (THC) popped 5%. The hospital operator raised its 2009 forecast and reported better than expected earnings. - Nice pop, says Karen Finerman.
Las Vegas Sands (LVS) popped 8%. BofA/Merrill upgraded the stock to ‘buy’ from ‘neutral’ citing Macau operations and low expectations. - I told investors to buy when the stock was $10, reminds Guy Adami.
Baidu (BIDU) popped 3%. Goldman Sachs upped its price target on this stock to $455 from $376. - They're the Google of China, says Pete Najarian. Giddyup!
FLIR Systems (FLIR) popped 6%. Last week shares closed above their 200-day moving average; that’s a bullish technical sign.
DROPS (stocks that slid lower)
Potash (POT) dropped 1%. Citi downgraded this fertilizer company and a rival to ‘hold’ from ‘buy’. - If the space continues to move lower, I'd own it for potential M&A, counsels Joe Terranova.
Sallie Mae (SLM) dropped 5%. Fitch downgraded SLB debt to "BBB-" from "BBB" - still investment grade - while preferred stock was downgraded to "BB" from "BB+" which are each below investment grade or "junk" ratings.
