September End Preview: Winners & Losers

Despite a pull back in the U.S. equity markets last week, the S&P and Nasdaq Composite are having their best September since 1998 so far, while the Dow is on track for its biggest % gain in September since 2007. Even though September ranks as the worst month historically on average for all three indices, the Nasdaq Composite has traded up 12 sessions out of 19 as of Monday's close while the Dow and S&P have finished up 11 days of 19.

  • The Dow is up 272.98 points or 2.87% MTD, tracking for the 3rd consecutive month of gains vs Sep '08 when the Dow lost -6% and Oct '08 when the Dow lost -14.06%
  • The S&P is up 42.48 points or 4.16% MTD, tracking for the 7th consecutive month of gains vs Sep '08 when the S&P lost -9.21%, and Oct '08 when the S&P lost -16.94%
  • The NASDAQ Composite is up 118.43 points or 5.89% MTD, tracking for the 7th consecutive month of gains vs Sep '08 when the NASDAQ lost -12.05%, and Oct '08 when the NASDAQ lost -17.73%

  • The dollar index is down -1.38% MTD vs. Sep '08 when the dollar index gained 2.69% and Oct '08 when it gained 7.92%
