Smart City Stocks

People are migrating from rural areas to cities in unprecedented numbers. Sounds like a sea change worth trading.

Following is the report from Monday’s Fast Money:

The Big Apple's growth surge may be cooling off but the move to metropolis in the emerging world is just heating up.

- Every year, the earth adds seven cities the size of New York.

- Every day, 180,000 people migrate to a city.

- And every minute during the next 20 years, 30 Indians will leave rural India for an urban center.

As the globe's population makes a mad dash for the megalopolis getting reservations at Nobu is going to be the least of your problems.

We’re talking transportation, electricity, water supply, and waste removal -- the present-day infrastructure in Beijing, New Delhi, and Mexico City can't handle the crush.

And that means cities need to get smart.

From intelligent electric grids that maximize efficiency, and minimize pollution -- to 'smart roads' that talk to your car and control traffic flow -- to apartment buildings that generate their own food supply -- the multi billion-dollar buildout is already beginning.

So how can you trade this sea change?

I do it with Walter Energy [WLT  Loading...      ()   ], says Guy Adami. I’m a buyer on pull backs.

I’m bullish on Novellus [NVLS  Loading...      ()   ] and Teradyne [TER  Loading...      ()   ] as plays on increased demand for semiconductors, adds Joe Terranova.

For me the play is long Cisco [CSCO  Loading...      ()   ] as a smart grid play, says Pete Najarian.
