Many Wall Street analysts and experienced traders look for patterns or unusual activity on the average volume of certain stocks, which are often in conjunction with breaking news.

Amazon.com [AMZN  Loading...      ()   ], for example, is trading today over 600% of its 10-day average volume, after the company reported better-than-expected earnings after the bell on Thursday.   Sometimes, looking at unusual volume levels may help point you to research a stock you may not have been following.

As such, and in an effort to help you spot trends, CNBC's By The Numbers is introducing a look at stocks in the S&P 500 displaying unusual trading volume.  This analysis will be in response to all the positive feedback we received from readers regarding our current updates on stocks hitting new 52-week highs.

Keep in mind that this analysis is only a starting point for more homework.  Whether you use these statistics for your daily trading preparation or love to follow the stock market activity, let us know what you think.
