Experimental Swine Flu Drug Authorized by FDA

The Food and Drug Administration has given what's called Emergency Use Authorization for a new H1N1 flu drug.

That essentially gives BioCryst Pharmaceuticals regulatory special dispensation to sell its intravenous antiviral for use on certain, specified adult and pediatric cases of suspected or confirmed H1N1 that require hospitalization.

Peramivir is an antiviral, not a vaccine.

The CDC requested the FDA allow this special use of the drug, which is still considered experimental, but has been shown to be effective in clinical trials in fighting severe cases of the flu.
