Major indexes had briefly pared gains after business activity data showed activities in the U.S. Midwest expanded to their highest level since since September 2008. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 76.71 points, or 0.77 percent, at 9,885.87. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 8.46 points, or 0.79 percent, at 1,057.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 11.70 points, or 0.56 percent, at 2,085.85. But the second-largest U.S. oil company behind Exxon Mobil managed to offset part of the drop in energy prices by increasing its oil output and cutting costs during the quarter, helping it beat analysts profit forecasts. Third-quarter net profit fell to $3.83 billion, or $1.92 per share, from $7.89 billion, or $3.85 per share, in the same quarter a year before. The stock gained 0.4 percent to $78.20 after market open.
