STAMFORD, Conn., Oct 30, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Great leaders not only "surround themselves with the best people possible" but they also emphasize the team's importance in achieving strategic goals and downplay their own individual accomplishments, says Xerox Corp. Chairman Anne M. Mulcahy.
Ms. Mulcahy provided the keynote address at The Fairfield/Westchester SIM 2009 CIO Executive Leadership Summit, an annual conference organized by The Fairfield/Westchester Chapter of the Society for Information Management and HMG Strategy, LLC.
During her keynote address at the conference, which drew more than 300 senior IT executives from the New York metropolitan area, Mulcahy told attendees that "leaders who develop followership have much better chances of success." Mulcahy spoke from her own experiences in directing Xerox from the verge of bankruptcy to a successful financial turnaround since she became CEO in Aug. 2001.
For CIOs to succeed as transformational leaders, they also need to acclimate their strategies to an organization's internal culture while aligning the IT organization with the business, says Hunter Muller, President and CEO of HMG Strategy. "Today's environment requires CIOs to be transformational leaders," says Muller. Inherent traits among transformational CIOs include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, a solid understanding of market conditions and a firm grasp of "how technology can be leveraged to gain competitive advantage," Muller adds.
Transformational leaders can also learn valuable lessons from their roles as mentors. Mentoring "is a two-way street," says Greg Fell, CIO at Terex Corporation in Westport, CT and one of the Summit's chairpersons. "You're probably learning a lot if you're the mentor but you just don't realize it," he adds.
