PHILADELPHIA - Norfolk Southern said on Monday that it would spend a total of $11 million upgrading its Philadelphia Navy Yard to expand track and parking space.
The railroad said it will spend $6 million of its money, and is getting $5 million in aid from Pennsylvania. It said the expansion would create the capacity to handle more than 72,000 trailers and containers per year.
Construction is set to begin in mid-2010.
Norfolk Southern said the expansion is part of its multi-state Crescent Corridor initiative to build an intermodal freight route between the Gulf Coast and the Northeast. The project includes straightening curves, adding passing tracks, improving signals, and building new terminals.
Norfolk Southern shares fell 24 cents to $46.38 in afternoon trading.
