Markets Salute the Troops on Veteran's Day

Historically and on average, the U.S Markets have been up about 58% of the time or more on the day of Veterans' Day and slightly down a week after. The S&P has averaged best of the major indices on the day of Veterans' Day, up an average of 0.1% and up 64% of the time.
Here is a look at the major indices performance on Veterans' Day, 1 week Later, and 1 month after we pay tribute to the men and women that serve our country...

Dow since 1900:

  • Day of Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of  0.07%
    o Up 58% of the time when it gained an avg. of 0.92% , down 42% of the time when it fell an avg. -1.13% 
    o Biggest gain 3.8% in 1932  
    o Biggest drop -6.8% in 1929
  • 1 Week  after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of 0.09%
    o Up 58% of the time when it gained an avg. of 1.7% , down 42% of the time when it fell an avg. -2.2% 
    o Biggest gain  5.84% in 1930    
    o Biggest drop -9.21% in 1931
  • 1 Month after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of 0.38%
    o Up 60% of the time when it gained an avg. of 3.2%, down 40% of the time when it fell an avg. -3.9% 
    o Biggest gain 18.4% in 1905    
    o Biggest drop -28.9% in 1931

S&P since 1928:

  • Day of Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of  0.1%
    o Up 65% of the time when it gained an avg. of 0.71%, down 34% of the time when it fell an avg. -1.08% , and flat ~1%  in 1945
    o Biggest gain 3.23% in 1932  
    o Biggest drop -6.23% in 1929
  • 1 Week  after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. loss of -0.34%
    o Up 47% of the time when it gained an avg. of 1.56%, down  52% of the time when it fell an avg. -2.11%, flat ~1% in 1949 
    o Biggest gain 6.4% in 1980    
    o Biggest drop -8.1% in 1931
  • 1 Month after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of  0.1%
    o Up 63% of the time when it gained an avg. of 2.8% , down 37% of the time  when it fell an avg. -4.5%

  • Day of Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of 0.05%
    o Up 58% of the time when it gained an avg. of 0.8%, down 42% of the time when it fell an avg. -1% 
    o Biggest gain 2.8% in 1990 
    o Biggest drop -2.9% in 2002
  • 1 Week  after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. loss of -0.11%
    o Up 53% of the time when it gained an avg. of 1.9%, down 47% of the time when it fell an avg. -2.4% 
    o Biggest gain 5.65% in 2002
    o Biggest drop -6.94% in 1974
  • 1 Month after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of 0.81%
    o Up 58% of the time when it gained an avg. of 4.4%, down 42% of the time when it fell an avg. -4.1% 
    o Biggest gain 13.2% in 1999    
    o Biggest drop -13.6% in 1973

Leading the Dow [.DJI  Loading...      ()   ] higher today are: Boeing [BA  Loading...      ()   ], McDonald's[MCD  Loading...      ()   ], American Express [AXP  Loading...      ()   ], Wal-Mart [WMT  Loading...      ()   ], and Travelers [TRV  Loading...      ()   ]

In addition, leading the S&P [.SPX  Loading...      ()   ] to the upside are predominantly home builders such as Pulte Homes [PHM  Loading...      ()   ], KB Home[KBH  Loading...      ()   ], and Lennar [LEN  Loading...      ()   ].
