SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Intel Corp., which is the world's largest maker of microprocessors, said Friday that it named Douglas Melamed as its top lawyer.

Melamed, 63, will take charge of Intel's legal matters and corporate and government affairs, the company said. He will report to Intel CEO Paul Otellini.

Intel's previous general counsel, Bruce Sewell, left in September to become general counsel at Apple Inc. He had been Intel's public face in its fight against allegations of antitrust abuse — a role that will now fall to Melamed.

Melamed's previous post was as a partner at law firm WilerHale. He also worked for the Justice Department between 1996 and 2001 as acting assistant attorney general responsible for the antitrust division and as principal deputy assistant attorney general.

Intel shares rose 22 cents to $19.90.
