CHICAGO - UAL Corp., parent of United Airlines, is giving some business to regional carrier ExpressJet Airlines that is currently handled by other partner carriers.

The Chicago company said Monday that ExpressJet Airlines, a unit of ExpressJet Holdings Inc., will operate 22 ERJ-145 aircraft under the United Express brand.

The new flights, which begins May 1, will replace those previously done by other United Express partner carriers whose contracts have expired.

United, which said ExpressJet made a competitive bid, did not give details about whose contracts expired.

Major carriers often use regional carriers to operate connecting flights for them and to feed passengers to their hubs.

ExpressJet shares jumped 73 cents, or 29 percent, to $3.29 in morning trading, while UAL shares rose 27 cents, or 3.7 percent, to $7.52.
