Dell is creating a new communications division, in a push to place more emphasis on mobile devices, CNBC confirmed Friday.
The new department will focus on creating portable devices such as mobile phones — a market the group entered earlier this year.
Ron Garriques, current president of the company's consumer division, will head the department. His former unit will merge with the small-business computer group.
This is Dell's second large restructuring of 2009.
Perot Jr. to Join Board
Separately, Dell said that Ross Perot Jr., son of former presidential candidate Ross Perot Sr. and chairman of Perot Systems before Dell bought the company this year, will join its board.
Dell said Perot will start immediately and stand for election by shareholders at the company's annual meeting next year.
Dell agreed to acquire Perot Systems, a technology services company founded by Perot Sr., in September for $3.9 billion. The deal closed Nov. 3.
Dell shares closed the session 1 cent lower at $13.45, but rose slightly in after-hours trading.
