Balance Of Power Hanging By A Thread

Wall Street is closely watching the outcome of the special election in Massachusetts. It could reshape the landscape in DC.

At issue is Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat, which Democrat Martha Coakley is trying to retain for her party.

If she’s unsuccessful and it’s won by GOP challenger Scott Brown, Democrats will no longer have a 60-seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate. That means Republicans would be able to stage a filibuster and kill health care reform.

Will they do it? Right now it seems quite likely considering the vote has pretty much been split along party lines for months.

“I think you can make a pretty good argument that health care might be dead," Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" today when asked about a GOP win.

With the balance of power hanging by a thread, which companies stand to benefit the most depending on the outcome of this election?

For insights we turned to Daniel Clifton of Strategas Research. He put together a list of winners and losers.

Stocks That Could Rally Off Coakley (D) Defeat
Sector Stock
Healthcare (HUM), (PFE)

In case you’re wondering why Strategas is bullish Goldman and Morgan Stanley on a Coakley (D) defeat it’s because because President Obama has put forward a tax on financial companies, explains Daniel Clifton of Strategas Research on Fast Money. If a Republican wins that new tax is much less likely.
