Google Founders Selling Shares

Friday, 22 Jan 2010 | 6:11 PM ET

In extended trade Google edged lower after word hit the Street that co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin each plan to sell 5 million shares of their company stock.

The sales will occur periodically during the next five years.

That's according to regulatory documents filed Friday. At current prices, 5 million shares of Google stock would be valed at $2.75 billion.

Google Co-Founders Sell Shares
Google co-founders will cut their stake in the company to 47.7M shares, with Brian Kelly, Kanundrum Capital president.

After the divestitures, Page and Brin combined will still own 47.7 million shares. Together, they would hold 48 percent of the voting power among stockholders, down from roughly 59 percent now.

Brian Kelly of Kanundrum suggests this could be a sign of the top. ""They certainly know better than anyone else what the company's earnings look like. For me it's a negative. It tells me they think this is a good level to start selling stock.

Tim Seymour, however isn’t bothered by the sale. "They're probably doing their best to communicate to the market. And the fact that they want to monetize their stake in the company over 5 years doesn't bother me at all."

What do you think? We want to know!
