A Great Telco Spec Stock?

By: Tom Brennan
Web Editor, Mad Money

Cramer has covered the merging of telecommunications and the Internet from nearly every imaginable angle, giving Mad Money viewers myriad ways to play it. Well, on Friday he offered one more.

He’s done segments on faster Internet speeds, streaming video, increasing bandwidth and the Web’s infrastructure. He’s also highlighted companies that improve text messaging and improve wireless networks. But the one area of telco he has neglected so far is much more Old World than these others: voice.

But not just on legacy, circuit-switch public networks. The money these days is going toward connecting these-old-fashioned wire-line connections with the more modern Internet Protocol system growing in use today. The end goal is to make the transition seamless so that there’s not time lag and that voice quality is just as good as those older networks.

Telco companies are spending big bucks to upgrade their infrastructure, Cramer said, which means the trend is worth of some speculation. He likes Sonus Networks [SONS  Loading...      ()   ], which makes the technology necessary to connect old networks to new, as the play on it. Watch the video for his full report on this latest Mad Money spec pick, which Cramer thinks has limited downside.
