Hot Gadget Alert: Sprint's 4G Phone Game Changing?

Tuesday, 23 Mar 2010 | 5:54 PM ET

Chatter about what’s next in wireless is all the rage right now as the CTIA wireless show gets underway in Las Vegas. And we’ve got the exclusive!

CNBC’s Scott Cohn has the first look at Sprint's new 4G Android smartphone - the first of its kind.

Called the Evo, “The camera has 8 megapixels and the processor has 1 Megahertz. It’s basically a computer,” Cohn says.

Exclusive: First Look At Sprint's 4G Phone
We have an exclusive first look at Sprint's new 4G phone. Could the hotly anticipated new 4G phone be the gadget that puts Sprint back on the map?

The gadget goes on sale this summer, HTC produced it. No word on the price yet but Sprint is taking orders.

According to the WSJ, the future of the company is riding on the Evo. "It sees 4G as a way of winning back the most lucrative customers willing to sign a long-term contract. The carrier has lost nearly 9 million customers over the past three years," says the paper.

By the end of 2010 Sprint says the following cities will have 4g capabilities; Los Angeles, Miami, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington.

Sprint says its 4G network delivers peak download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. "This is very cool," says Cohn.

Sprint's 4G phone is by most accounts the most exciting and anticipated device being debuted at the CTIA event. But it isn't the only one.

Samsung debuted its new Rogue which will retail for $79 and Nokia showed its Neuron which will sell for $69,” says Cohn.

What’s the trade?

In the spaceI’m bullish Nokia, says Tim Seymour.

I think it’s all negative for Verizon and AT&T, muses Gary Kaminksy because they’re going to have to make prices more attractive to retain customers. And downstream I think the winner is American Tower.
