How much income did former Klansman David Duke report on his 1998 tax return?
1998 was rough for David Duke, who had earned just under $19,000 that year. At least, that's what the white supremacist and former gubernatorial candidate told the Internal Revenue Service. In reality, he had earned $65,000, and in 2002 he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of filing a false tax return, earning him 15 months in prison. Upon his release in 2004, he claimed that the case against him was wholly without merit, saying that he took the plea deal in order to escape the bias that the court system held against him. His attorney, Jim McPherson, agreed, saying that there wasn't a case against Duke, but that "some jurors would convict him because of who he is."
