How many states have made medical marijuana legal?
Medical marijuana is legal in 14 states. California was the first to legalize it when the Compassionate Use Act was passed in November 1996 via a ballot initiative with 55% of the vote. Colorado followed suit, along with 12 other states, including Alaska, Montana and Nevada. The question of medical marijuana legalization is also scheduled to come up for a vote in 14 more states this year, including such traditionally conservative places as Alabama, Kansas and South Dakota.
