This Thursday marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, which made environmental protection a national issue.

As you may know NBC Universal is committed to the green movement. Our company always strives to bring an environmental perspective to everything we do.

And in that spirit, Fast Money has an Earth Day play for you! Pete Najarian says the migration from standard grids to smart grids is a trend worth trading.

Earth Week: Smart Grids
Cisco says the smart grid could be bigger than the internet.

What’s that? You don’t know what a smart grid is?!

We didn't either. And we're not alone. According to a Harris Poll about two-thirds of the nation is just like us - which isn't very good because smart grids could really change the energy landscape.

In a nutshell it’s a sophisticated computer system that’s laid on top of an electricity grid to make it work more effectively and efficiently.

The computer can do a wide range of things from spot potential overloads, to capture electricity that might otherwise escape to monitor what times of day you use the most power – and offer you discounts if you use more power during off-peak periods.

And smart grids aren't just pie in the sky. Already governments are dedicating billions to smart grid projects with President Obama among their biggest supporters.

What’s the trade?

Itron and Echelon are the direct plays. Or you can get exposure with GE, says Najarian.
