[AAPL  Loading...      ()   ]. However, unlike its rivals, Google will allow users to buy books from a broad range of sites using many different devices.

What makes this development so intriguing is that the company already provides a service called Google Book Search; that allows users to search and preview millions of books from libraries and publishers worldwide.

With Google Editions, users could buy a digital copy of a book they discover through the search service, the report said.

Google Editions could launch as early as late June.

What does the Street think?

The tech analyst we spoke with is less than excited. “This is going to the Google graveyard and it’s a crowded place,” says BGC analyst Colin Gillis. And he brought along a list of other failed initiatives. It follows:

Google Editions is another example of Google making a splash on the headline but the actual product seems a little thin, concludes Gillis.
