Can US De-Couple From Europe?

Thursday’s panic was largely triggered by a belief that Western economies are so closely linked, the US couldn’t escape the crisis unscathed.

The selling was driven by a string of market worries. They follow:
- European banks have about $2.1 trillion in exposure to *PIIGS debt;
- Euro weakness will likely have a strong impact on profits at some US companies;
-the EU is the number 1 trading partner for China.
(*PIIGS stands for Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece & Spain)

CNBC’s Steve Liesman thinks the market got it wrong.

Earlier in the week, he told us that although we can't ignore what's happening in Europe we can overstate it.

"They couldn't de-couple from us on the way down but we can de-couple from them on the way back up," Liesman says. "European exports as a percentage of total US exports are just 23% and that's a number that's been declining."

"We can do okay with a European slowdown. It's not going to be critical for the US economy," he says.

David Rosenberg, chief economist and strategist at Gluskin Sheff isn’t buying it. “The whole notion in an inter-connected world that we can decouple is an oxymoron of oxymorons.”

What do you think? We want to know!
