Defense, Defense: 6 Stocks That Should Weather A European Storm

Friday, 21 May 2010 | 6:28 PM ET

Did this week's extreme volatility leave you reaching for Pepto-Bismol and cash positions? Hope not, they might not be the best moves to make.

With the euro marching lower and concerns about Europe's economic stability continuing to swirl, you may feel nauseous but the only thing that's going to soothe your upseet is a smart defense.

Playing Offense: Made in the U.S.A.
U.S. companies to buy on a weak Euro and a strong dollar, with Michael Block, Phoenix Partners Group.

And Michael Block of Phoenix Partners tells the desk, although investors should avoid US companies that sell to Europe -- rather than go entirely into cash - they should also embrace those that sell heavily in the US.

But which sector?

Healthcare and utilities are too defensive, he says. I'd look at retail.

A list follows:

% Revenues from US Last Quarter
Macy's 100%
Finish Line 100%
Nordstrom 100%
AutoNation 100%
Ross Stores 100%
Urban Outfitters 90%
Source: Phoenix Institutional Equities

Not only do these companies generate most if not all of their sales in dollars (so earnings won't take a hit on euro weakness) the euro/dollar exchange will likely give them greater purchasing.

It will require having confidence but Block thinks retail will lead the way.
