Fast Money 360: Apple

Considering shares of Apple are down 10% or more since late June how should you game this stock ahead of earnings, Tuesday?

Seems like a good time for Fast Money 360.

Find out what fundamentals, technicals and insights from the options world all suggest lie ahead for this stock!

FUNDAMENTALS

UBS analyst Maynard Um is bullish Apple. He reminds the desk that Apple typically guides conservatively.

”We expect the company to beat numbers going into this quarter,”

Despite chatter that the iPhone may have met its match in the new Motorola Droid, Um doesn’t think demand for Apple’s smartphones -- or other products for that matter – will diminish anytime soon. In fact, he’s more worried about supply.

”The key really is going to be whether or not they'll be able to produce enough iPads and iPhones going into next quarter,” he says. However, he’s optimistic and concludes “we'd be buyers into the quarter.”

CHARTS

Oppenheimer’s Carter Worth is also very enthusiastic. “We're a buyer of Apple here going into earnings,” he says.

Patterns in the charts look bullish. “The stock has consolidated for the past four or five months around the $250 level,” he says

That sets up well for the Apple bulls.

”We think any overbought conditions is being worked off and the stock will respond well to earnings,” he concludes.

OPTIONS ACTION

Pete Najarian of Optionmonster.com says the options activity suggests investors are expecting a sharp move after earnings – between 8-10% - but it’s hard to determine which way.

“Options are split,” he says, calls and puts, so you’re not getting a great read there.”

Considering all the issues with the iPhone 4 it’s not surprising that some investors may be bearish. But Najarian isn’t one of them.

“I expect that move to be higher. I’d be a buyer,” he says.

What else must you know?

If Apple trades down to $225 that would be a tremendous entry point however getting long at these levels is a coin flip, says Guy Adami. And looking at the bearish argument, Apple performed poorly Monday in a reasonably decent tape. That could be a sign of more weakness to come.

It feels like the stock is a little too big to rise, muses Anthony Scaramucci. With a market cap of $250 billion everything has to go right for Apple. If just a couple things go wrong the stock has a bias to the downside. I still like Apple long-term but in the near-term I suspect it’s looking at major headwinds.
