Yahoo Preview: Bet On Internet Underdog?

Monday, 19 Jul 2010 | 5:32 PM ET

After Google disappointed the Street last week, investors are keeping a close eye on Yahoo! results due Tuesday. What must you know?

Ahead of earnings ThinkEquity upgraded Yahoo to "Buy" from "Hold," citing continued improvement in display growth driven by the company's alliance with Microsoft.

"Our second-quarter checks indicated flattish market share for Yahoo as well as improved cost-per-click prices for the search industry," the brokerage said in a note. A stabilizing search share along with successful Microsoft integration, was enough for ThinkEquity to turn bullish on this stock.

Jefferies also reiterated its ‘Buy” rating on the stock ahead of earnings as well as its $24 price target citing stronger demand in US Display advertising, and near-term margin expansion potential.

Citi’s Mark Mahaney tells Fast Money in a live interview “I expect a neutral to positive earnings surprise. Display revenue trends and search revenue trends are positive this quarter. Also I expect this leadership manages expenses better than Google did.”

What’s the trade?

I like the stock going into the quarter, says Mahaney. I think the stock works from here.
