Web Extra: Smash Up Disney, Says Kneale

Tuesday, 20 Jul 2010 | 5:59 PM ET

With TV networks, theme parks and cruises lines, could even the most iconic name in the industry benefit from a little smashing up?

CNBC’s Dennis Kneale invites you to imagine the unimaginable: a smash-up of the Walt Disney Company!

At first glance, Disney is the last titan you'd want to break up, says Kneale. It boasts the best collection of entertainment assets under a single brand that means the same thing around the world.

Yet even Disney could unlock some value here, he adds.

Why not spin off a 15% stake in ESPN? That sports mecca could be worth $30 billion---almost half of Disney's entire market cap. And while we're at it, why not look at spinning off theme parks and striking a long-term brand license? Same for the retail chain, he suggests.

But don’t hold your breath. Disney is way too controlling to do any of this - but that doesn’t mean an investment banker can’t dream!

Kneale wrote about his idea at length – click here to read “Kneale: The Case for Breaking Up Disney.”
