Netflix is up sharply on Tuesday after it set up a battle for broadband control of pay-per-view and the new world that we are just approaching.
The company inked a deal to become the exclusive web distributor of premium channel content from Epix—a joint venture run essentially by Viacom's Paramount unit, which also includes Lions Gate and MGM.
The deal gives Viacom approximately $1 billion dollars in licensing fees over five years.
So, is it time to unplug your cable? Not quite yet, but with Netflix wanting to be the dominant player where consumers go to get all premium content by streaming it over broadband Internet connections, anything is possible. The medium is only in its infancy.
