Is It Time to Bet Against the Consumer?

Friday the 13th is all about the consumer — at least it is this week. Retail sales are released at 8:30 a.m. ET, and August sentiment hits the tape at 9:55 a.m. ET. And before the bell, JCPenney reports earnings.

Despite some bright spots, recent data has pointed to a burnt out shopper. Does the old saying still ring true: "don't count out the American consumer?"
