QUIZ: E-cycling

When people think about recycling, they usually think about aluminum cans, newspapers and cardboard boxes. However, another kind of product that gets much less attention but is no less important to recycle is consumer electronics. The average consumer will replace a computer or an iPod several times as the technology improves, but the old one contains too many precious metals and hazardous materials to just toss it in the dumpster. This is why the recycling of electronics, or "E-cycling," has become the newest front in our war against waste.

How much do you know about recycling electronics? Take our E-cycling quiz and find out.

What type of metal is present in electronics that make them hazardous to dispose of in landfills?

  1. Alkali metals
  2. Heavy metals
  3. Poor metals
  4. Transition metals

Electronics are dangerous to dispose of in landfills because they contain heavy metals, such as arsenic, lead and mercury. These metals are known to cause illness in individuals, but the concern goes beyond the individual level --- if these metals were to leak into the ground of a landfill they could penetrate into the earth and eventually contaminate the water supply, causing illness on a large scale.

What percent of the municipal solid waste stream is represented by used electronics?

  1. Less than 2%
  2. 5%
  3. 8%
  4. 12%

Less than 2% of the municipal solid waste stream is represented by electronics. Good news, right? Well, not exactly. That number is almost certain to grow as long as consumers continue to replace obsolete equipment as frequently as they are now, and as long as problem-plagued gadgets like the iPhone 4 reach the marketplace in vast numbers.

According to an Oberlin College study, how many computer disks are thrown away every year?

  1. Half a million
  2. 1.5 million
  3. Half a billion
  4. 1.5 billion

Almost 4 million computer disks are thrown out on a daily basis, or 1.5 billion annually. According to the study, this is the equivalent of a stack of disks the same height as Chicago's Sears Tower being created every 21 seconds. But don't worry, they'll degrade in 500 years.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, how many desktop computers are in storage?

  1. 6 million
  2. 66 million
  3. 660 million
  4. 6 billion

Not all used electronics are disposed of improperly. A considerable portion of them sits in closets, attics and garages, where they will do nothing but gather dust for the conceivable future. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as of 2007, 65.7 million desktop computers languish in storage.

In 2007, what percentage of television sets was recycled?

  1. None
  2. 8 percent
  3. 18 percent
  4. 28 percent

In 2007, approximately 18 percent of the 26.9 million televisions that were ready for end-of-life management were recycled, while the remaining 82% were thrown away, mostly in landfills. This is actually a better rate of recycling than previous statistics had shown, as many states had begun mandatory electronics recycling programs by 2005.

How many laptops must be recycled to save an amount of energy equal to the electricity used by 3,657 homes annually?

  1. 1 million
  2. 1.5 million
  3. 2 million
  4. 3 million

The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that they see no public health risks in the disposal of electronics, as long as they are disposed of in "properly managed municipal solid waste landfills." However, they still recommend that discarded electronics be kept out of landfills and their valuable resources recovered instead. For example, recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 US homes in a single year.

What quantity of circuit boards can contain up to 800 times the amount of gold ore mined in the US?

  1. One metric ton
  2. Two metric tons
  3. Three metric tons
  4. Four metric tons

As is the case with laptops, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends the recycling of all computer components for their valuable resources. The EPA estimates that one metric ton of circuit boards can contain 40 to 800 times the concentrations of gold ore mined in the United States in one year.

The automotive and jewelry industries all use metals recycled from what technology?

  1. Blackberries
  2. Cell phones
  3. DVD players
  4. iPods

Just as with other electronics, cell phones contain a wealth of metals that can be recovered in the recycling process, such as copper, gold, platinum, silver and zinc. All of these metals are used in a variety of industries, including automotive and jewelry, or they can be re-used in other forms of electronics.

License plate frames and garden furniture can be made using what component from recycled cell phones?

  1. Pitch
  2. Plastic
  3. Polymethylpentene
  4. Rubber

In the 1967 film "The Graduate," Ben, portrayed by Dustin Hoffman, is told that "there's a great future in plastics." Over 40 years later, this statement is more prescient than ever before. The plastics recovered from recycled cell phones can be used in new electronic devices, and can also be used in non-electronic items such as license plate frames, garden furniture and replacement automotive parts.

How many short tons of the municipal solid waste stream are represented by used electronics?

  1. 0.25 million short tons
  2. 1.25 million short tons
  3. 2.25 million short tons
  4. 3.25 million short tons

As of 2007, 2.25 million short tons of the municipal solid waste stream was made up of discarded used electronics. This includes, computers, mice, printers, keyboards and television sets, and the quantity is only expected to go up for the foreseeable future.
