Pops & Drops: McDonald's, DeVry...

Tuesday, 31 Aug 2010 | 5:42 PM ET

Following are the month’s biggest winners and losers. Find out why shares of McDonald’s popped while DeVry dropped and how to play the moves.

POPS (stocks that jumped higher)

McDonald’s (MCD) popped 5% for the month. Nothing seems to stop this fast food giant which said around August 10th that sales at restaurants climbed nearly 6% - in part due to the success of the new McSmoothie. - I see no reason not to own this stock, counsels Guy Adami.

Stock Pops & Drops
The Fast Money traders take a look at today's biggest market movers.

Priceline (PCLN) popped 30% for the month. Early in the month shares of this budget based travel site surged to a 10-year high, after the company reported a 71 percent surge in second-quarter net income as travelers booked more trips. - I think the stock moves above $310, speculates Joe Terranova.

Gold Miners ETF (GDX) popped 11% for the month. The miners followed the spot price of gold higher as investors took a shine to safe haven trades. - I'm a buyer, says Peter Schiff of EuroPacific Capital. I think gold is going much higher.

DROPS (stocks that slid lower)

Devry (DV) dropped 30% for the month. Investors hammed this stock making it the worst performer in S&P 500 on concerns the government intends to crack down on the lending standards of for-profit schools. - I'd stay away from the sector broadly, says Steve Grasso.

Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) dropped 3% for the month. August was a rough month for hard commodities such as crude oil and metals with many emerging nations are tethered to their performance. - I'm a buyer at $41.50, reveals Tim Seymour.
